Windows Vista come with two useful programs, at least for me, that is Windows DVD Maker and Windows Movie Maker. I use both of them rather often or at least once a week. The things I learnt since beta 1 up to the final release, RTM version. If I need to keep this features working correctly or not face with none responding, I have something to avoide:
- Do not install any codec pack. Those codec pack like K-lite or whatever that need for extra support, wider rang of file that Windows Media Player can play, this will make those software stop working. That may happen from beginning when you try to ad a movie clip or sometime after the process is begin.
- Do not install any current version of CD/DVD burning software. Really? Badly? you may try to install the latest Nero (version 7.5.9.0A which Vista Ready), then try to burn a movie you made with DVD Movie Maker and see what happened. Note for Nero: if you use UltraISO or WinISO don’t install Nero. If you install Nero and uninstall it these software will never work lke before.

You are having a laugh, eh?

Hi Daniel,
I not sure about DivX, I never tries it. If you run the latest Nero 7 ( 7.7.5.1), it seems there will not a problem. Otherwise, you may need to install minimal package of Nero — just Burning part not video and audio buddled applications.
For codec I suggesting that you may need to remove DivX and install Vista Codec: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Vista_Codec_Package/1159994557/1
Hi Malagor. I hope you are still updated on this post coz it has been a while since you posted your original message. Anyway, I am having problems right now, I CANNOT USE MY MOVIE MAKER and DVD MAKER in my Vista Home Premium. Unfortunately I’ve already installed a K-Lite codec pack and a Roxio Burning Software in my system before having the knowledge that it would ruin my Movie Maker and DVD Maker! What shall I do to fix this? I’ve already tried uninstalling both my K-Lite Pack and my Roxio Burning Software but THEY STILL DON’T WORK! My DVD Maker keeps on closing whenever I insert a video on the list… And for my Movie Maker, I CANNOT USE IT AT ALL! Media files cannot be uploaded on the timeline when making a video!!! What shall I do? Can anyone help me? This is so frustrating…
Hi GJ,
I still have this issue with DVD Maker. I am not sure but you may need to re-install Vista.
For codec, try Vista codec pack (not K-lite). For Burning software, you may need to install only burning stuff not the whole pack –or looking for some portable Nero. Indeed I like Roxio but it ruin DVD Maker.
Hey Malagor,
Okay. I guess i’ll just reinstall my Vista. Actually, I while ago, I’ve considered that option. It’s just that backing-up my files would be time consuming! But I guess I have no choice… =(
Thanks Malagor for the fast reply. Till next time…

GJ,
Don’t forget to use Windows Easy Transfer, it will help you a lot.
Ok Malagor! I’ve never tried using that feature. I guess I’ll be using it for the first time.. Thanks for the advice… again. =)

Thanks in advance for reading this and any help.
José,
Portugal.
Sorry for late replay. I think it is the same issue when I used hybrid AVI file with DVD Maker. DVD Maker do not support hybrid AVI– I means the AVI file that created by custome setting for audio and vedio cordec. Otherwise, the issue come from either Codec Pack you installed or DVD/CD burner software.
I have a problem using my Windows Movie Maker version6 (the one installed in Windows Vista). It has been working fine for me, until now. Whenever I drag or add media files (pictures/videos) in the timeline or storyboard to create my video, the media files do not appear on the timeline/storyboard! This makes me incapable of making any video! This is the second time that this kind of problem happened to me. I experienced the same problem before I reinstalled my Windows Vista Home Premium Edition. After reinstalling my Vista, the Movie Maker worked fine, but now I am having this problem… again! Does anyone know how to fix this? Hope someone could help ’cause I frequently use Windows Movie Maker… Thanks in advance!
Hi guys,
To save you removing Nero entirely, open up WMM, go to Tools > Options > Compatibility and remove all the Nero things that come up on the list down the bottom of the window. Hope this helps!
Hi,
I am trying to import video in to Windows Movie Maker that I have burned on to a DVD-RW using an 8mm camcorder hooked to a DVD recorder. Movie Maker does not does not recognize the files in the directories VIDEO_RM or VIDEO_TS. When I click on a file after selecting all files I get an error message that indicates I do not have the required codec installed. After reading other post I am reluctant to install any thing that will cause problems with Movie Maker or DVD Maker. Any help that you can give will be apprecitated. I am tring to edit the 8mm video with video from a Mini DV to create a wedding Video. Thanks!
Hi! I hope there still are people reading this thread… I’m also having problems with the Movie Maker. It starts alright but as soon as I try to load a movie file I get the message about the “data execution prevention”. I even get this message when trying to transfer/download video from my DV-cam. Does anyone have a solution?
To JO
Change Data Execution Prevention settings
Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats by monitoring your programs to make sure they use system memory safely.
If you choose to protect all programs, you can still turn off DEP for individual programs. If you suspect that a program does not run correctly when DEP is turned on, check for a DEP-compatible version of the program or an update from the software publisher before you change any DEP settings.
1. Click to open System.
2. Click Advanced System Settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Under Performance, click Settings.
4.Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
4.1 To turn off DEP for an individual program
Select the check box next to the program that you want to turn off DEP for, and then click OK.
If the program is not in the list, click Add. Browse to the Program Files folder, find the executable file for the program (it will have an .exe file extension), and then click Open.
Thanks for the quick reply!
I’ve already tried to turn it of but Vista won’t allow me to turn of the DEP for MovieMaker (…or DVDMaker or CaptureWizard!)
I looked at what you wrote in the beginning of this thread about not installing a burning software. I just bought this computer and Roxio was installed automatically from the beginning. Do you think it has got anything to do with that?
Installed a VistaCodecs package and it seems to work alright now.
Hi, I am use Vista Ultimateam and am experiencing troubles with DVD maker. It all works fine till when I hit burn, it it tells me that I have to istall a burner or that it is not plugged in. Thing is I already hav one that works fine on nero. Please help
Mo! You are a genius! I’m reading all of these posts that say I have to uninstall these and delete that and here you offer me an option to ditch certain filters without deleting anything! It worked wonderfully.
Thank you.
Mo, you’re better than genius. Your solution works with lots of other prgrams, Jet Audio, Ulead… just uncheck anything that belongs to other software and it’s fixed!
Mo, Thanks mate. I’ve been struggling with this Bloody problem for so long, and the solution works wonderfully!!!! Cheers
Hey everyone, I’m having issues with my Vista 32bit version. I downloaded an AVI file and it plays in Windows Media Player, but as soon as I import it into Vista Movie Maker, it no longer has any picture and the program thinks it to be a sound file instead of a video file. I’ve downloaded Vista Codec Package, and my computer came with Roxio. I unselected everything in the tools options of the program and still no luck. I’m kinda new at this and I don’t really understand what the Vista Codec Package is or what to do with it, so if there is something I need to do with that, please let me know. I really need help because I’m trying to create a DVD of compiled files I’ve downloaded from various places for a class of mine, so naturally, any help would be much appreciative. Thanks guys.
Oh, one more note. The file has no picture, but it does have video.
Wow, I sound like an idiot now *the file has no picture, but it does have *sound*. Sorry for the confusion.
Thank you, thank you, thank you sooooo very much! I was in panic mode after I had to clean off and restore my Windows Vista. Than I tried out Windows Movie Maker only to find out it didn’t work O_O I spent literally hours working on a homemade music video and had already experienced issues when I used Adobe Premiere Pro before on my Windows XP computer. However, when I read your tips I realized that I also installed K-Lite codec pack. So I just uninstalled it and now my project is working!! YAY! Thank you ^-^
What codec pack did you install? I’m having the same problem, I used to be able to put videos into Movie Maker, but every time I open or drag/drop it crashes and gives me the DEP error.
Hey Malagor YOUR A GENIUS! IUSED VISTA CODEC THINGER AND IT WORKED! MY DVD MAKER WORKS! YOUR THE BEST THANKS SO MUCH IVE BEEN DIEING TO MAKE THIS MOVIE AND BURN IT!!!WOW THANKS.
