Lost your emos after insatll WL Messenger 8.1 final?
Have you install Windows Live Messenger 8.1 final? Do you lose your emos? Can you add same emos you ever had? If you experienced this, let find out that has happened then.
Windows Live Messenger change the way its handle emoticon. You may notice that when you add emos from conversation windows or create new emo from file it have two fields to fill, Keyboard Shortcut and Name. For Messenger 8.0 and previous version the name field is optional but not with 8.1. I do not know the reason on this change, Messenger team never talk about it (on Connect, Newsgroup or their useless blog).
The above shot is Messenger 8.1 “add a Custom Emoticon” dialogue. If you use a version or a beta build of Messenger prior to 8.1 final and you did not filled out “Name” field, after you install 8.1 final you will lose most or all of your emo. That’s all.
Do the team know this bug before? Yes, they known. This bug is one among the first few bug were submitted on Connect after Messenger 8.1 managed beta testing launched . The status of this bug was always changing, from resolved to closed and not reproducible. But if the team can not repeat this bug and can not solve it why not telling customer before hand instead of I (not me) learnt someone to use Messenger. Perhaps, Mike McCoy has clarified (on email to tester) why this issue is not to be taken into account:

There is no way to fix. WLM team get warned about this since they released the first beta (to tester) but they can not solve it.

I tried the option 2 posted on your blog. I uninstalled v8.1 and reinstalled v8.0. All my custom emotions were GONE!!! So I used my wife’s MSN ID for a test and sent back all the emotions and added Shortcut and Name for each emotion. Then, I reinstalled v8.1. Only a few of the emotions showed up. Looks like there is no way to fix this. I haven’t tried option 1 yet, as it is too cumbersome. I think I will just uninstalled v8.1 again and stick with v8.0 and upgrade to future version when it is available and hope Microsoft engineering will resolve this.
Thanks for this blog — I searched and searched for solutions and this blog is the best.

I think there may be a way. If you did a System Restore Point before you updated, then you could just go back to that point.
I lost over 300 emos.
And new version isnt good. Its confusing and its not user friendly. It doesnt accept any new smilies i add. They arent the correct type apparently and i cant put up a personal picture for the same reason. And i have no idea how to set a background. Too bad v8.0 got removed in this process, i am so mad.

OMG, i removed 8.1 from the Add/Remove Programs place in control panel and downloaded 8.0 back and i have all my emotions back. I am sticking with one and not changing.

Hi Sherry,
I don’t think there is an issue in your case. Gennerally, saved emoticon or custom added ecmoticon is per messenger account per machince. This means if you save emos on WLM account Sherry1 on PC1, you can only see the emos when you signed with Sherry1 on PC1. If you signed in on PC2 with PC2, you will not see those emos becuase they have been save on PC1. And, if you signed in with Sherry2 on PC1, you will never see emos.
I suggested to WLM team during beta phase of 8.1 for a feature called “raoming and syn emos” that will allow user use his/her saved emos anytime anywhere. But seem no one hear it.

Solution for all lost emoticons, display pictures and so on, it seems that it happens when you use a router, especially a us robotics
so here is what i’ve done
go to http://192.168.123.254/
- Click’Log in’
- Click’DHCP Server’
- at IP Pool Starting Address set at 10
- Click Fixed Mapping
- Mac Adress Control: Enable (no)
- Connection control (yes)
Clients with C checked can connect this device and (allow) unspecified mac adress to connect.
- Select DHCP Clients at your pc and/or other pc’s in network
- Click Copy to ID
- space after 192.168.123 leave empty
- set ‘C’ to true after each ip
- Save and Reboot.
