Few things you need to know before install Norton Antivirus 2007

Well, last two weeks I thought I should looking for some anti-virus solutions. I tried Bitdefender Antivirus 10 on my brother’s machine and I was thinking I should give Norton Antivirus another try at lease for the last time. Try before you buy is good solution so I managed to install Norton AntiVirus 2007 trial (the link is not easy to find).

The installation process and overall look and feel gives me some impression. It’s not that bad (or ugly) as you have seen in 2006 version. The performance is somewhat is improved. I must say it much better than 2006. The ability of catching virus and unwanted sofware when compare to Bitdefender 10 and Live OneCare 1.5 is better. The time it took for full system scan is approximately 3 hours (used space is 75% of 250GB HDD), while the worse is OneCare which took 6 hours (for only virus scan). Oh, sorry I don’t mean to compare.

Here few things you need to know about Norton AntiVirus 2007:

  • It’s Symantec’s anti-virus application so what you can expect is resource hog. As I said, 2007 is better than previous version but I it still slow down Windows start up time, applications start up time and overall performance. You will notice it if you don’t run it on some kind high-end machine. Note: my machine is P4 3.0HT 65nm / 1.0 GB DDR RAM 533/Asus P5LD2 Deluxe / Geforce 6600 256MB DDR.
  • It turn off Windows Firewall silently without telling you anything or asking for your decision. Norton did this before when Microsoft released its Service Pack 2 for Windows XP but at those time AntiVirus 2005 inform and asking for permission. Not for this time with 2007, I just noticed it during uninstallation process.
  • It turn off Windows Defender. And again without asking for decision or inform anything.

I don’t know how it dare do this, what’s it assumed itself to be? I do agree with Microsoft for that first decision to do not allow security vender access the deep layer of system. To Symantec, from now on.. Goodbye.
