FeedDemon 2.5 RC2 (Build 2.5.0.7)

My favorites RSS reader client, FeedDemon, update the new version 2.5 Release Candidate 2 Build 2.5.0.7. Well, after testing with RC1 I see not much change over stable version 2.1, only noticeable things are changed style and more sluggish performance. Below is top five new features in 2.5:

  • Synchronized news bins with shared RSS feeds
  • Prefetch unread items for offline reading (File|Prefetch Unread Items)
  • Rewritten “Popular Topics” feature
  • Embedded videos now display in newspapers
  • “Who’s linking here?” added to each post in a newspaper

More additional features and release notes for 2.5 RC2 can be found , download link available  (or direct ).

Fixing: Windows Vista won’t connect to the network

I found an interesting post “Windows Vista won’t connect to the network - how to fix the problem by making Vista less aggressive on the network” by Steve Lamb.

Windows Vista automatically tunes it’s network settings to make the most of the available bandwidth. In some scenarios Windows Vista can fail to connect to the network - this is often due to old routers which don’t always quite follow the standards to the letter. There is an excellent white paper titled Windows Vista TCP/IP Networking and IPv6 Migration that explains in quite some detail how Windows Vista tunes it’s performance - it’s well worth a read. The white paper explains the rationale behind the default settings and the implication of making changes.

If you find yourself in a situation whereby you are unable to access a network then it’s worth trying the following from a command line that’s running with elevated privilege.

Note: An easy way to run an elevated command line is to create a shortcut to “cmd.exe”, right click on the shortcut (whilst logged in as an administrator) and select “Run as administrator”.

To view the current TCP optimisation settings issue the following command:

C:\Windows\system32>netsh interface tcp show global

Building Live Hotmail from scratch

Ok, , Outlook Connector will be launched next months, with upcoming new build. The new WL Hotmail is a part of Windows Live service and platform–well what’s the team though about new Hotmail at begriming, back to last 2.5 years.

Richard Sim, Senior Product Manager for Windows Live Hotmail .

  • rearchitected the entire service from scratch,
  • swapped out the backend storage infrastructure (literally swapping out old boxes for new ones)
  • instrumented user actions,
  • created new ways to serve advertisements,
  • developed new advertising products,
  • created a scalable and flexible mail platform to power email for universities and other partners,
  • managed a large scale beta process with a continuous user feedback loop,
  • redesigned our product development and deployment processes,
  • streamlined our signup flows,
  • opened up Outlook client access for ALL free users (coming very soon),
  • created a Windows Live Contacts (subscribe to contact updates) service,
  • created a new selection paradigm for email client applications (dynamic checkboxes) which has been eventually adopted by Yahoo Mail Beta,
  • and released a new safety bar to educate users about the context of every mail that arrives in his/her inbox

You known that official code name is “Kahuna”, but the original is “Tsunami”– the disaster over western coast of southern of my country.

Windows Live Mail Desktop got name change

After WL Mail changed the name of web mail service from Windows Live Mail to Windows Live Hotmail and , WLMd team , previously known as Windows Live Mail Desktop or WLMd.

The new Windows Live Mail client will come with all features of WLMd plus some features of Outlook Express (of XP) and Windows Mail (of Vista). the new features are:

  • New and improved UI:  Cleaner design, and now with Aero support!
  • Setup and account migration improvements:  Smoother experience overall - you will now have fewer steps in order to get started with the client
  • More parity with OE and Windows Mail:  S/MIME and LDAP support are just two of the features that we’ve been working on for WLM which will bring us more parity with our other free Mail clients
  • Performance and stability:  The new product will be faster and more robust than WLMd.
  • No Ads:  Yes, it’s true – there will be no graphical ads in the WLM beta build.

Windows Live Mail client will be released some weeks after this, and it’s seem to be final launched.

Windows Live Hotmail Officially Launched

Some of you, Windows Live Hotmail user, may noticed that “Beta” tag was pulled out from Windows Live Hotmail. My talk about Microsoft ready to lunched final version of its web mail service. Live Hotmail took 2 years for development with about 10 milestone launches. Read more detail for final version from and discover your new mail at .

Note to those you addicted to Hotmail, there will be not Hotmail anymore. With no choice you may need to adapt to classic version of Live Hotmail. For me, I love Live Hotmail’s UI and functionality– far above Gmail and Yahoo Mail beta.

Don’t forget, if you waiting for official availability of live.com account (like yourname @ live.com) you need to keep waiting for coming months.

Internet Explorer 8.0: short info from MIX07

The Future of Internet Explorer session at MIX 07 didn’t give us the shape of future version of Internet Explorer. As Chris Wilson, platform architect of Internet Explorer, said he is not allowed to speak but still some hints.

Let’s try to sort out some things and re-organize.

  • Security is #1 priority. From my view, I didn’t see the chance that Microsoft will add new security feature but more likely to improve its anti-Phishing feature, protected mode and ActiveX control. Microsoft now open new space for ActiveX-related security issue with its new Silverlight.
  • More standards-complaint. Here is real issue that IE got blamed. The web standard expert always said IE is far from standard while Microsoft thinking about million sites out there that never following the standard. It’s Microsoft start to break million sites this time.
  • IE 8.0 more compliant with CSS 2.1 layout standards. The second web browser, first is Opera as always, that will support CSS 2.1 *Draft*.
  • IE 8.0 object model more interoperable with other browsers.
  • APIs to support local storage for mash-ups.

There is no announced schedule release of IE 8.0 but expecting that it would be release some time in 2008. From Wilson, each new version will slipped from 12-18 months to 2 years circle. I guess, IE 8.0 will have native support of Microsoft SilverLight in some manner.
