MS forced WL Messenger 8.5 Beta 1 to upgrades
Published by September 26th, 2007 in .Windows Live. 0 CommentsToday Microsoft push another forced to MSN/WL Messenger user to upgrade. The user who currently using Windows Live Messenger 8.5 beta 1 will be forced to upgrade to beta 2. If you are already running Beta 2 you will not affected.
For all you beta 1 users out there, you should expect to start seeing the upgrade prompts. We’re testing a few different upgrade scenarios with this release, so it is expected that different operating systems will have different upgrade experiences:
- Windows XP users will see the new unified installer experience as an optional update
- Windows Vista 32- and 64-bit users will see the Windows Installer and MSI experience as a mandatory update
- Windows XP 64 and Windows 2003 Server users will see the Windows Installer and MSI experience as an optional update
These scenarios are all part of our beta testing – thanks again for being a beta tester!
Ok, since Microsoft forced the old MSN Messenger user on Windows XP to upgrade to Windows Live Messenger 8.1 BUT you don’t want it. How to avoid upgrading to WLM 8.1?
The step is simple. Just jump into MSN Messenger folder and change “compatibility mode” to Windows 2000. That’s all.
If you already installed 8.1, the way back is uninstall it and re-install your old MSN Messenger, then change compatibility mode before signing in.

One new feature surpriced me is Microsoft integrate new offering Windows Live Folder survice into OneCare. With extra chage means that user may get more than 500 MB storage space which would avialable for free. Btw, Live folder is currently limited to few number of tester. I just got email this morning for Windows Live OneCare 2.0 beta program. OneCare 2.0 is designated as a ”pre-premiere” not available to public. Some highligh, new feathers are:
- Multi PC management - designate a hub PC and then add additional PCs to your OneCare circle using a common Windows Live ID. You can then see the status of the other PCs within the group.
- Printer Sharing - share your printer with all the PCs in your OneCare circle
- OneCare Online Photo Backup - paid storage is available online for photo backups (we’re hearing 10GB but that could change by the end of the beta)
- Securing wireless networks - if your router is supported OneCare 2.0 will allow you to secure your wireless network
- x64 support
If you want to participate this beta, please go to MS Connect.
It just quick that Microsoft open inviation to public just for 6 hrs to submit nomination to Windows Live 2.0. I just get good optunity as managed beta tester, so I get access.
If you miss this change but want to try Windows Live Photo Gallery, check out this site. As far as I can tell you, it a bit better than Vista’s Windows Gallery wtih some small added features.
